How to Design Ribs for Rotational Molded Products.

2026 01/27

Ribs are a commonly used method to enhance strength in rotational molded products. They not only ensure uniform wall thickness but also save material, improve strength, and help avoid aesthetic defects. Since some rotational molded products are large, flat, thin-walled items, their surfaces are prone to warping and deformation while also lacking sufficient strength. Therefore, to increase the rigidity and strength of large flat surfaces and stress-bearing areas, it is necessary to consider designing ribs on corresponding surfaces of rotational molded products. Products designed with ribs can also achieve equivalent strength using less material and shorter molding times, leading to a better balance between wall thickness, strength, and cost.

Regarding the dimensions of ribs, there are three key elements: length, width, and height. The height here refers to the protrusion of the rib from the wall surface, and it is primarily this height that determines the rib's strength. Generally, the designed height of a rib should be at least four times the average wall thickness of the product to significantly enhance its strength. The width of the rib should be designed to be at least five times the average wall thickness to provide sufficient space for powder or liquid to flow adequately into the cavity. If the space is too narrow, the raw material cannot flow evenly into this part of the mold cavity, leading to bridging, internal voids, and increased shrinkage in the product.

When hollow ribs cannot be used, shorter solid ribs may be employed. However, solid ribs present issues such as a tendency for the material to bridge and an inability to completely fill the mold cavity where the rib is located. If a solid rib is fully filled, it results in localized wall thickening, increasing cooling time and causing greater shrinkage than the thinner walls surrounding the rib, which can deform the adjacent wall surfaces. Therefore, solid ribs are generally used with caution.
