What are the advantages of the rotational molding process?

The rotational molding process, also known as rotomolding or rotational casting, is a manufacturing technique used to produce large or complex-shaped plastic products. This process offers the following advantages:
Forging aluminum molds (1)
  • Low mold cost: Compared with other plastic molding processes such as injection molding and blow molding, the cost of rotomolding molds is generally lower, especially for large products, as the mold structure is relatively simple and material consumption is low.
  • Size flexibility: Rotomolding is not limited by product dimensions and is particularly suitable for producing large, hollow open- or closed-mouth products, with lengths reaching several meters or even tens of meters.
  • Uniform and controllable wall thickness: It is easy to control wall thickness in different parts of the product, achieving edge thickness greater than 5 mm, which is especially suitable for product designs requiring enhanced edge strength.
  • One-piece molding: The product has excellent integrity with no seams or weld points, avoiding stress concentration and improving the mechanical strength and durability of the product.
  • Multi-layer and composite material molding: Rotomolding enables simultaneous processing of multiple layers, allowing different types of plastic materials to be combined in a single product to meet specific performance requirements.
  • Built-in components and inserts: Metal or other material inserts—such as reinforcing ribs, connectors, and couplings—can be easily pre-placed in the mold.
  • High design freedom: Due to its process characteristics, rotomolded products can have very complex geometric shapes, including textured or contoured surfaces.
  • Low waste, environmentally friendly, and energy-saving: The process generates minimal scrap, has a high material utilization rate, and requires no high-pressure injection, resulting in relatively low energy consumption.
  • Short development cycle: Compared with other processes, rotomolding molds are quicker and more flexible to design and modify, facilitating rapid product launch.
In summary, because of its economy and process adaptability, the rotomolding process is widely used in various fields such as outdoor furniture, chemical storage tanks, water recreation equipment, military equipment cases, and emergency rescue containers.
