The parting line of a rotational molding mold, also known as the mold's parting surface or split line, refers to the contact surface between the two planes of the mold flange. During mold design, the appropriate selection of the parting line or parting surface plays a critical role in the success of the mold design and manufacturing. The design of the parting line must pay attention to the following points:

The location of the parting line should facilitate production operations such as mold opening and closing. Generally, it is advisable to set the parting line at the largest dimension of the product. This makes the opening and closing of the mold more convenient, aids in quickly closing the mold after adding material and rapidly opening the mold after product formation, accelerates demolding speed, and improves production efficiency.

The location of the parting line should consider the aesthetic requirements of the product. No matter how well the mold is made, a trace of the parting line will still be visible on the produced product. If this trace appears on a prominent area of the product's surface, it will be the first thing people notice when interacting with the product, significantly affecting its appearance and value. Severe traces can even lead to the product being scrapped. Therefore, when designing the parting line, try to position it at the edges of the product where it is less noticeable.

The placement of the parting line should simplify the mold structure. An overly complex parting line can increase mold costs and affect the efficiency of mold opening and closing. Typically, the parting line should be set on a single plane as much as possible. This simplifies the mold structure, reduces manufacturing costs, and facilitates the removal of the molded product from the mold, thereby enhancing production efficiency.

Sometimes, due to the complexity of the product shape or other special reasons, the parting line may need to be designed more intricately. For example, certain sections may be higher or lower than the main parting line. Complex parting lines can aid in mold alignment and mutual fitting. However, the more complex the parting line, the greater the manufacturing difficulty and cost. Additionally, try to avoid placing the parting line on slanted surfaces or areas with angle changes to ensure even stress distribution along the parting line.

In sheet metal mold manufacturing, the process typically starts with the parting line, which serves as the reference for the entire mold fabrication. This area is not only the strongest part of the mold but also the most stressed, frequently operated, and most prone to damage during the rotational molding process. Therefore, it requires special attention during mold design and manufacturing.
